on October 10, 1961, in honor of Nathan Phillips , Esq., Q.C.
Mayor –
City of Toronto 1955 – 1962.
"The International competition that resulted in the City Hall and the public squire was the inspiration of Mr. Phillips,
who, while mayor conceived the idea which he subsequently pursued unfalteringly
through all the legislative municipal procedures until assured the project would
be a reality.
Mr. Phillips has the enviable unprecedented record of
being a member of theCity Council for thirty-six years including eight
years
as Chief Magistrate.
A glimpse of the bright future unerringly seized upon,
expanded and nurtured with deep resolve, led to this unique and great
accomplishment marking Toronto’s emergence as an exponent of outstanding architecture,
and stimulated downtown
redevelopment."
From plaque erected by Toronto City Council April 28, 1969.
